Harbin Normal University (HRBNU) was founded in 1951. As a prestigious university, HRBNU has a long history of teacher education.  HRBNU proudly serves as a provincial base for teacher training, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities and fine arts in Heilongjiang, China. HRBNU was designated as provincial high-level university for prioritized construction, and it is ranked “Excellent” in the recent national evaluation by the Ministry of Education. HRBNU is one of the universities of National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China. In the 13th Five Year Plan Period, HRBNU is one of the hundred universities of key construction in western and central China.

HRBNU is located in Harbin, known as the Ice City which is also famous for its long history and profound culture. It consists of two campuses on the south and north bank of the Songhua River. The university covers 346 hectares with a total site area of 160 hectares. There are several exhibition centers including the Wenbo Museum, Animal and Plant Museum, Mr. Youshou Memorial, and Arts Hall. The library holds more than 8.9 million books and is a key protection unit for national precious ancient books.

The University has 25 colleges and departments, 83 undergraduate majors, 22 graduate program disciplines, 8 professional degree programs, 9 doctoral program disciplines, and 6 post-doctoral research stations. Materials science ranks top 1% in ESI. The Marxist theory, pedagogy, fine arts, and Chinese Language and Literature rank top 30% in China. The total enrollment of full-time students in all programs reaches 37,000.

The University has a strong and well-respected faculty. There are over 1,700 full-time teachers. The university has over 100 state-level teachers with the title of the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Technical Leaders at Various Levels”, state-level experts with major contribution, state-level famous teachers, and those experts that enjoy the special bonus from the State Council.

HRBNU has developed several academic exchange programs and intercollegiate relationships with 71 universities in Russia, the United States, Great Britain, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Poland, South Korea, Brazil, Egypt, as well as other countries and regions. Our university co-founded “International Academy of fine arts, Harbin Normal University” with Moscow State Surikov Academy of Fine Arts. It is the first Chinese and foreign cooperative educational institution in Heilongjiang Province. Our university has established four Confucius institutes overseas and was awarded “Outstanding Chinese Institute” by Hanban. HRBNU serves as teacher training center for international promotion of Chinese and the testing center of “Certificate of Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages”.

Since 1984, HRBNU has fostered more than 14,000 international students of over 66 countries from all over the world. Our university has formed multi-level and multi-disciplinary international students’ education system including long-term and short-term general training students, bachelor students, master students, and doctoral students. There are several enrollment categories such as self-financed students, government scholarship students (Chinese Government Scholarship, Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, and Heilongjiang Provincial Scholarship), University scholarship students, exchange students, and program students. Now HRBNU enrolls over 1,000 long-term and short-term international students every year. The Institute has achieved remarkable results in personnel training, and international students have won awards in various competitions at all levels. Many international students majoring in master's degree in Chinese international education have been admitted to the "local Chinese teachers" positions funded by the Confucius Institute Headquarters. In 2018, our university passed the national accreditation for studying in China with outstanding achievements.
